I am not good at maths can you help me

Hello everybody, my name is May and I am 17 years old from Greece.

I have a problem with mathematics; I find myself very troubled with them but I can understand the theory and the equations... it's just that I am learning really slow, I mean I need a very close and simple explanation so I can understand them and as a consequence I fall behind. I know the basics, but for some reason even if I have read the theory and know how to solve, I do really stupid mistakes, I might not see that minus plus etc., or a part of the equation I might stuck for no reason on a part of the problem and start overthinking upon it until I end up to find that the true answer was far simpler than what I had thought. In a few words, I understand them by a lot of practice and I am really careless upon their solving.

I am getting so emotional when I am stuck that I end up crying (because I am stupid). To be honest, the years before I wasn't paying attention in maths. I quit studying them and I begin all over now and of course I have some gaps in my knowledge, but I manage to keep track as much as I can.

I want to improve, but I don't know what to do; whatever I do, I continue to be careless, forgetting and overcomplicating the things. I want to study economics, I love it and I want to get better.
I don't want to give up, but my emotions get the best of me and that makes me feel really stupid.
Thank you very much for your time.

Don't you get such problems with some other subjects as well?

If you mean mathematical equations in other subjects such as physics well I can solve them....we had also a book called financial mathematics and included some basics simple stuff I was doing stupid mistakes there too but I could handle it way better....in math its really hard and I don't know what to do there..... :(

If you mean problems by forgetting stuff and losing my consertrasion yes but I can handle in any other subject except maths

I think what you are describing is attention deficit disorder, which is usually treatable.

Yes you have point but when I was seven I attended a child psychologist for 4 years of tretment and he explained that these issues came from sadness and anxiety it was a difficult period of my life then ....I don't know maybe I should check it again.....

If you're otherwise healthy, stable, sleep okay, etc., I would think you might be suitable for trying Ritalin (under appropriate medical supervision, of course).

@Skipjack... I'd recommend adding a disclaimer to that comment. :P

Hey May98, usually, in my opinion, maths is an easy subject to score marks. You can't able to learn maths by practicing. To study maths thoroughly, you need to understand the methods to solve a problem. In maths, there may be different methods to do different problems or even the same problem. So, rather practicing a problem for solution, it is good to learn the methods to do a particular problem will work effectively. This is my way of studying maths.
