What is a Tower?

I've been searching a lot on google and I can find what mean :

we have a partial ordered tower : G -> H -> ... -> K

what does it implie on this morphism? or on this group?

My guess is that when you have some (subfield) diagram like


then that configuration where there is just one single column is referred to, without any precise definition, as a tower (says my textbook...)
